Frequently Asked Question
Are veneers permanent?
Porcelain veneers are not considered permanent, but they are a long-lasting solution for improving your smile. With proper care, veneers can last 10 to 15 years or even longer before they need to be replaced.
What can I eat with veneers?
With porcelain veneers, you can enjoy most of the same foods you would with natural teeth, but you should avoid biting directly into very hard foods like ice, hard candy, or popcorn kernels, as these can chip or crack veneers.
How are veneers different from crowns?
Veneers are thin porcelain shells that cover only the front surface of a tooth. They are mainly used for fixing chips, discoloration, gaps, or mild misalignment. Crowns cover the entire tooth above the gumline and are often recommended when a tooth is badly decayed, broken, or weakened after a root canal.
How many veneers will I need?
It depends on your smile goals and the condition of your teeth. Some patients choose a single veneer to fix a chipped or discolored tooth, while others opt for several to create a more uniform, symmetrical smile. Many people get veneers on the front six to eight teeth of the upper jaw.
Can veneers be whitened?
No, once you choose the color for your veneers, they will remain that color for the entire time you have them.
Are veneers painful?
No, once veneers are bonded to your teeth, you will not feel them. The layer of enamel that is removed is very thin, and you do not feel any discomfort. A local anesthetic is used during the procedure to apply the veneers.
What materials are used for dental veneers?
At University Family Dental, we use porcelain for all our dental veneers because of its natural look, durability, and resistance to staining.
